Planning Officer of the Year Award (and new office in the North)

Planner of the Year Award

I am very sympathetic to the cause of Local Authority Planners. They are often the unsung heroes of the industry. The pay is not great, the workload is immense, they get accused by NIMBYs of taking “brown envelopes” if they recommend approval for an application the NIMBYs hate. Then they get shouted at by Councillors, they get roasted at Planning Committees and often have the members of the committee tell them they got it wrong on rather spurious grounds… then they have to go in front of a planning inspector and justify to the inspector why the members of the committee is right and they are wrong (after they wrote it up for approval). And let us not forget that they also get shouted at by planning consultants, architects and developers if they do their job (let us remind ourselves that they are law enforcers who have a duty to ensure the applications comply with the law!)

So, with that in mind, this year we are running our very first “Planning Officer of the Year” award. It could be a case officer, a team leader, a head of planning, an assistant director or even director that works for a Council who has done a remarkable job.

If you would like to recommend an officer for this position, please do drop me an e-mail henry@theccp.net with a short (100 words or so) with the name, council and reason why you think the officer should be celebrated as our “Planning Officer of the Year”
